Cinematic Portraits.
With creative freedom being somewhat harder to come by these days, I thought I would try something a little different from my current ‘walk around town and take photos of nice cars at the Crescent and empty shops on the way home’ routine. I decided to use both the 35mm and 50mm F2 to see how simple or soft I could make an image. Again, kinda using the lenses backwards, I used the 35 at F2 for maximum fall-off for the wider shots and the 50 at F2 for the closeups (to allow myself some distance).
Colour wise, I have a bit of a habit of chasing anything that looks like it was taken on a Pentax 67 using Portra 400, but decided to go for something more cinematic and heavily split tone the image, tinting my highlights and shadows. The biggest giveaway here is the blue tint in the highlights that colours Becky’s white top and skin, the result being a softer more dramatic look. I’m not totally sure how much this style would work when it comes to travel work or day to day shooting, but could be really interesting when shooting some friends weddings this year, but overall it was a fun experiment that I’ll definitely try again.
